Vermont women are choosing entrepreneurship 2x more often than the national average.
VT women-owned businesses are vital to the state’s economy. They produce revenues of $2.2B and generate 36,326 FT and PT jobs.
Women-owned firms in VT are fewer in number, smaller in size, and lower in annual revenues.
Between 2007-2012, the number of women-owned businesses in VT increased by 15% — 9% more than male-owned businesses.
VT male-owned firms are twice as likely as female-owned firms to have employees.
VT’s privately-held firms cluster in lower revenue levels - women-owned firms especially so.
Revenue growth for VT women-owned businesses is on the rise.
The Revenue Gap: Female-owned firms in VT generate 19 cents to every dollar generated by male-owned businesses.
VT women business owners are significantly underrepresented in 9 of the 10 highest grossing sectors.

In 2017, Vermont’s General Assembly weighed in at 39.4% women, second only to Nevada.
In 2017, Vermont’s General Assembly leadership is balanced between 3 men and 3 women, and women chair 53% of House and 36% of Senate Committees.
Three of Vermont’s 5 Supreme Court Justices are women. It is the first time in history that VT’s highest court has been predominately female.
As of March 2017, VT’s new Governor has appointed women to a record 43% of both top Administrative positions and Executive Cabinet posts.
Women constitute 38% of Tribal Council members in the four Abenaki bands in VT. Three of the four Tribal Councils are gender-balanced.
It took an additional 16 years for women’s share of legislative seats to increase from 35.5% to 37%.
Women hold 42% of the 1,600 seats on 167 state boards and commissions. 28% of them are gender balanced and 22% are female dominated.
In 1993 VT ranked 7th in the country for women’s parity in political representation.
Vermont and Mississippi are now the only 2 states that have never sent a woman to Congress.
Of the 296 statewide officers elected since 1778, only 11 have been women.
Nationally, women hold an average of 24% all statewide offices. At 17%, VT currently comes in second to last in New England.
One of the five judges serving on the US District Court of Vermont is a woman. Women are less than 13 of VT’s 38 appointed Superior Court judges (one seat is currently vacant.)
In 6 of Vermont’s 10 most populous cities, women make up 40% or more of select board members and city councilors. Statewide, that number drops to 21%.
In Vermont, women hold 21% of select board member seats and 52% of school board member seats.
Only one of Vermont’s 8 mayors is a woman.
Women are just 2 of Vermont’s 59 police chiefs, 2 of its 260 fire chiefs, and none of its 14 sheriffs.
Of VT’s 100 highest grossing corporations, just 8 are led by women. If we exclude hospitals, colleges, and universities - which are not among those listed in the Fortune 500 - that number falls to 4.
While women chair 43% of the region’s hospital boards and are 35% of those who serve as hospital trustees, they serve as only 13% - or 2 - of the region’s 15 hospital CEOs.
Women in higher education hold over a third of leadership roles as board members, provosts or academic deans, and tenured faculty members.
Women as a % of College Presidents
Women hold 71% of all reported Vermont non-profit leadership positions. When the budget size is over $1M, that number falls to 46.1%.
